Gaboratory Inspirations by Cactussilver
Gaboratory Jewelry review
The classic silver gothic look is created by a putting together a potent mix of leather clothing & heavy sterling silver jewelry. It is often commonly referred to as the biker look, the gothic look, the punk look or the rock n roll look. Whatever you deem fit to call it, the biker image is a cultural trend which runs deep in post-hippie American fasion. The perception it inspires is that of a handsome, rugged, individualistic and masculine man riding a powerful Harley through winding country roads into the sunset with an adventure-filled agenda often with an element of heroism. It is a look which stirs one's active imagination and inspires awe, admiration & wonder. Today, the biker look is immensely popular, due largely to active promotion by musicians, bikers, biker enthusiasts, rock n roll enthusiasts and other cultural figureheads eager to express new age fashion via the clothes & accessories they wear. This article is a testament to the legendary Gabor Nagy: the one man who singlehandedly spearheaded gothic fashion during the post-hippie era of the biker.
Who is Gabor Nagy, and what is Gaboratory?
The Gabor Nagy house of design, born in the early 90's, was founded by the late Gabor Nagy, & was the very first pioneer and granddaddy of gothic biker look. Long beforethe existence of Chrome Hearts, Imperial Rose Collections, Room 101, Nagual, Travis Walker & other top biker accessory brands were born, the man who was responsible for the entire biker jewelry craze promoted his crazy, groundbreaking ideas to the fashion world & succeeded in getting the world sold on the leather-silver gothic look.
Gabor Nagy the Visionary
Gabor Nagy was a genuine a fashion visionary; one way ahead of his time. Going head-on against traditional ideas & perceptions of jewelry as tiny, delicate accessories adorned only by well-brought up, upper class ladies, Gabor Nagy founded Gaboratory & pioneered the entire idea of biker jewelry, which shook the fashion industry. Taking the shape of heavy, chunky sterling silver pieces bearing anarchistic edgy carved-in designs, biker jewelry was NOT delicate or feminine. Very much contrary to traditional jewelry which stirred ideals of good upbringing, Gaboratory's biker jewelry conveyed the contrasting image of the angry, rebellious outlaw biker. It became clear at the outset that Gabor's biker jewelry was not for the prim and prissy woman, and probably not even for women!
Going against the tides of tired fashion, Gabor Nagy single handedly inspired a fashion renaissance and brought jewelry into the realm of menswear. Trendsetters, celebrities & and many other leading icons quickly took to the intricate designs and solid feeling of Gaboratory's biker jewelry, & snapped up Gaboratory's jewelry pieces in sizeable numbers. Fans naturally caught on quickly as well.
The other thing makes Gaboratory's groundbreaking success even more admirable is the fact that Gabor pursued his philosophy in a time when diamonds had sent metal jewelry out of fashion. Sterling silver was treated as a mere setting for the diamond, the star accessory which had successfully dominated the world of jewelry since the phenomenal advertising campaign by De Beers in the 1950s. Gabor Nagy thought otherwise. He saw that unlike diamonds whose surfaces could accommodate only patternless and impersonal cuts & angles, the surface of sterling silver could be subjected to extensive creative efforts & be turned into one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork containing the heart of the artist. He sought to restore the rightful place of sterling silver in the realm of jewelry, and he did so in dramatic style.
Gabor Nagy's global footprint
Gabor's gothic silver fashion spread well beyond the shores of USA. Within a year of Gabor's revolution, Japanese tourists first set eyes on Gabor Nagy's biker jewelry in downtown LA, fell in love with the intricate artwork and imported an equally intense thirst for gothic sterling silver jewelry across the Atlantic to Asia. Today, the fashion craze has spread also to mainland Europe, especially in France & Germany. In Asia, (Taiwan, Korea and Japan) a revolutionary culture of individuality has emerged to snuff out the strait-jacketed and stiffly hierarchical traditional South Asian culture.
Although Gabor Nagy passed on several years ago, his spirit continues to inspire jewelers all over the world. His Gaboratory school of design has spawned a generation of gifted students successful in their own right, including but not limited toincluding Bill Wall & Travis Walker, the owners of the immensely successful Bill Wall Leather BWL & Double Cross designer brand. Richard Stark of Chrome Hearts, arguably the largest luxury label in the world of gothic jewelry, gleaned much of his inspiration from Gabor Nagy's designs, and today's top Chrome Hearts designs arguably have their roots in Gabor Nagy's early work.
